Brrr, are you currently experiencing freezing cold temperatures? And are you wondering if it’s safe to walk your dog in snow?
Dogs definitely suffer from extreme temperatures, just like us, so here are some tips for walking your dog in cold weather.
Check the weather report and try to schedule your walks for the warmest part of the day
Schedule in your dog’s potty breaks too. Neither of you will likely want to go outside, so getting toilet breaks into the schedule means that when the reminder pops up, you just put on your winter woollies and do it. No emotional negotiation needed.
Train your dog to enjoy wearing and walking in booties. This should be done before it starts snowing and training time should be scheduled in.
Fit your dog with a warm jacket.
Keep your dog leashed as you won’t be able to see what’s lying under the snow.
Don’t let your dog eat snow because it may have antifreeze or other chemicals on it.
Ice is slippery so proceed with caution!
Try to pick up your dog’s poop really fast. Otherwise, it will melt into the snow and you’ll have the joyful experience of smelling it come spring!
As your walks will most likely be shorter, schedule in some play sessions with your dog each day to exercise and entertain them.
Teach them different training commands like “Watch”
and games like “Find Your Food” and “Find and Drop It”
